Frequently Asked Question!

The ECPGEA, established in 2008, serves as the central unifying body for the entire Ethiopian cotton value chain. Its primary objective is to enhance the quality, competitiveness, and sustainability of Ethiopian cotton. It achieves this through policy advocacy, facilitating access to improved seeds, promoting sustainable farming practices, and connecting members to global markets (e.g., ESACO, pursuing ICAC/ICA Bremen membership).

ECPGEA is committed to adopting global ethical standards. It currently oversees organic cotton initiatives and is actively preparing to launch programs for BCI (Better Cotton Initiative) and CmiA (Cotton made in Africa) across major growing regions. Furthermore, pursuing membership in the ICAC and ICA Bremen helps align local practices with international quality and sustainability benchmarks, enhancing market access.

ECPGEA works closely with ginners and inspection services to ensure high fiber quality. Key activities include facilitating access to improved, high-quality seed varieties and promoting best practices at the farm and gin to minimize contamination. Affiliations like the planned ICA Bremen membership provide the latest quality specifications, which are translated into actionable guidelines for all members.

The Association fosters a balanced domestic value chain by leading dialogues to establish fair pricing mechanisms (often based on import parity) that offer producers a profitable incentive to sell locally. This ensures local factories receive a competitive supply, reducing reliance on costly imports and stabilizing the domestic supply chain for national industrial goals.

The sector offers significant appeal due to its vast untapped land potential ($\sim3$ million ha) and a high yield gap that guarantees profitable returns from modern farming investment. Opportunities exist in scaling up production, upgrading processing infrastructure, and attracting carbon finance through large-scale Greenification and sustainability projects.
